The Main Mercantile Building - 2007
620 Main St., Los Angeles.

This the oldest 'glass front' building in LA, built in 1907. It used to be a furniture factory and showroom. It was recently bought for a loft renovation. When they were close to completion, they realized that the common areas were badly in need of some help too. The lofts are live/work spaces, so a nice lobby for meetings is a nice 'perk'.

The main lobby and elevator/mail room as well as each floor's elevator lobby needed work... hello Velvet Butterfly Designs!

I also designed the logo which is incorporated into the lobby design and mounted on the concrete shear wall that goes from the first to the sixth floor. The concrete was really nasty - it's 100 years old! So a faux venetian plaster effect was done to spruce it up and give it some well deserved drama. On each floor either a logo or number, painted in a brushed aluminum finish, was mounted on the faux venetian wall. The stripes on the walls in the lobby and mailroom are in the same finish. The style of the glass and aluminum tables in the lobby is brought into each elevator lobby with a custom designed console shelf/table and mirror. There's one on each floor. The bench was also custom designed and built by us to create several seating areas. The concrete floor is original and very plain. Being that this is the only enterance to the building movers and lots of potential traffic prohibited us from doing anything really cool to it.

The Bellagio Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada. 1998

I spent 4 months in Vegas working exclusively for a local faux finishing company.
I don't have pics of some of the other areas because I forgot to take them when I was there...
and almost got kicked out recently trying to take pics after the casino had opened.
They're not really fond of people taking pics inside, yeah, not so much!

I guess they mean it "what happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas"

This is the entrance to the
High Limits Lounge.
The plaster columns are finished with
a 12 step faux marble tile effect.

This is the other side.
The wood on the left is faux, to match the real wood under the bar.

This is in the Atrium.
A faux oxidized copper effect
on individual iron panels surrounds
the entire upper walls.

This is a section of the walls surrounding
the Cashier's Cage.
It's a 5 layer faux treatment which
incorporates plaster and glaze.

This is one of the four corners
of the Cashier's Cage.
Faux wood and a 5 layer
faux finish are incorporated together.
All the wood is faux, except the shutters.
